The AI Cigar Sommelier

There is a fair argument that AI has no place in this world. The cigar is one of the last unhurried things — a craft measured in growing seasons and years of rest, kept by people who can tell where a leaf was grown by the way it burns. Software has mostly made such rooms worse: louder, faster, and lately thick with confident prose written by machines about cigars no machine has smoked. If that is your suspicion, it was ours first. Cigar·A.I. began as one smoker's private ledger; the Society came later, and the suspicion stayed in the design.

An AI cigar sommelier, as this house defines the term, is a program that does a tobacconist's clerical work — never the tobacconist's palate.

What the machine is not permitted to do

It does not taste, and it does not pretend to. It never states as fact what it cannot source. Where the sources run out, the field stays blank. It does not grade a member's palate or correct a preference — the journal records what a member reports, and judges none of it. It counts no streaks and awards no badges; logging earns nothing here, because a record kept for reward stops being true. And it does not replace any tobacconist, lounge, or elder with a better story. It keeps the ledger, so those rooms can stay about smoke.

What remains is gathering

The intelligence is an instrument, not an author of record. It reads the maker's own specifications and the published work of houses we trust, and brings back what they actually say. Every fact is marked where it sits: Verified when a source outside the sommelier confirms it, Unverified when nothing does. A private roll, a shop exclusive, a blend retired before it was catalogued — the sommelier says so rather than guessing toward the nearest match. A wrong answer delivered confidently is the one failure this house does not permit.

Where it writes in its own voice — a note on the evening's selection — the note is signed as the sommelier's own, never dressed as fact. A member always knows which is which.

The evening

The work ends when the evening starts. The whole product is a cigar from the member's own humidor — rested and ready, with the right pour beside it — chosen so the phone can be set down. It has nothing to sell, and no reason to keep anyone looking at it.

The house

Cigar·A.I. is the private sommelier of The Cigar Connoisseur Society, a membership institution founded in 2024 by Alan A. Grell. Members hold permanent, numbered places in the Society's register.
